Splash! Homeopathic Remedies for Swimmer’s Ear
Sunny days, splashes, and… sudden ear pain?
Just when the fun has started, swimmer’s ear can sneak in and put a pause on playtime. It’s painful, frustrating, and can leave your little ones sitting poolside instead of diving in.
But don’t worry! With a few easy, helpful tips including a simple ear drop recipe and gentle homeopathic remedies, you can help protect those precious ears and let the splish-splash never stop!
What Is Swimmer’s Ear?
Swimmer’s ear (aka otitis externa) is an infection of the outer ear canal, usually caused by water getting trapped in the ear after swimming. That warm, damp environment becomes the perfect place for bacteria to grow, causing pain, swelling, itching, and sometimes discharge.
Kids are especially prone to it because of how often they’re in the water and how much they love diving and dunking!
Step One: Natural Prevention & Relief with Homemade Ear Drops
This easy-to-make mix of natural ingredients helps dry out the ear and keep bacteria at bay. It works well as both a preventive measure and a gentle first aid solution if swimmer’s ear is starting.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Apple cider vinegar
Rubbing alcohol
A clean dropper bottle or spoon
How to Use:
Mix equal parts vinegar and alcohol (a 50/50 ratio works great).
After swimming, tilt your child’s head to one side and place 5–10 drops into the ear.
Let it sit for about 30 seconds, then tilt the head the other way to let it drain.
Gently dry the outside of the ear with a towel, no cotton swabs needed!
Note: Only use this remedy if the eardrum is intact (no tubes, no drainage, no suspicion of rupture). When in doubt, check with your pediatrician.
Step Two: Homeopathic Help for Healing & Comfort
Here are two go-to remedies I always keep on hand during summertime for swimmer’s ear:
1. Belladonna
Best for: Sudden, intense ear pain with redness, heat, or throbbing.
2. Hepar Sulph
Best for: Sharp, splinter-like ear pain, especially if your child is sensitive to touch or cold air.
How to Use:
Use either 30C or 200C potency.
Give 1–2 pellets directly in the mouth and allow them to dissolve (or chew if your kids are like mine).
Try to avoid food or drink for 15 minutes after taking the remedy.
Take every 2–3 hours during active symptoms of pain or discomfort.
As symptoms improve, reduce to 2–3 times per day and then stop once symptoms are mostly or fully resolved.
You can use these remedies individually, alternating, or together, depending on your child’s needs.
Here’s what one mom had to say after using them:
“My son used to get swimmer’s ear repeatedly throughout the summer, year after year. But since we started using these two homeopathic remedies along with natural ear drops, he went the entire summer last year without a single ear infection! More sunny days at the pool for me and more splashing for him.” — Happy Mom & Happy Kid
With stories like that, it’s easy to see why these gentle tools are a must-have for living rooted all summer long!
Swimmer’s ear might try to sneak in, but now you’ve got simple tools to keep it at bay. With a little prevention and gentle support, your kids can stay in the water and out of the doctor’s office.
Here’s to a happy, healthy, splash-filled summer, and may the splish-splash never stop!
